Depicts herds traversing clouds, overcoming mountains, and bringing courage and resistance, as well as stories, as they run towards the sunrise, which represents hope and a new beginning. The background shift from a scene reminiscent of an ancient shan shui painting to an aerial shot of Metro Vancouver symbolizes that the journey is ongoing and transcends borders.

Studio 101 is an Eastside Arts Society program designed to foster meaningful and inspiring arts experiences for youth in Vancouver’s Eastside.
Many students in this community have limited access to professional artists or art opportunities outside the classroom. Studio 101 bridges that gap by welcoming youth from Vancouver’s most economically and socially challenged schools into working Eastside Culture Crawl studios for free, hands-on workshops. For many participants, it is their first time meeting professional artists and seeing their creative process in action, unlocking new ideas, confidence, and possibilities.
This year, the program includes a mix of classroom art sessions and small-group visits to artists’ studios for immersive, hands-on workshops. Students will also explore the studios at Emily Carr University and learn from university faculty and instructors. In addition, Xpey’ Elementary will host a week-long artist residency, where students in grades 4–7 will create ceramics, painting, sculpture, and mixed-media works.
Artist Facilitator:
Janine Schroedter
Janine Schroedter is a multi-disciplinary artist working in printmaking, painting and ceramics. Her work is driven from her passion for the natural world especially the west coast. She is inspired by her love of birds and whale, two things she finds continual inspiration from. Janine likes to be playful with her approach to themes that when reflected upon may make you pause and take a moment. Holding a mirror to ourselves she works to create bridges between causes that may feel far away and ones in our own backyard.
Mat Holmstrom
Mat Holmstrom is an interdisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, ceramics, and sculpture. Themes of nature, the human condition, history, and abstraction intertwine with rich color palettes and expressive layering of shape and texture, creating a dynamic presence in his work. Between 2007 and 2012, he studied Fine Art and Illustration at Alberta University of the Arts and MacEwan University and has since participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions across British Columbia. In addition to his practice, Holmstrom teaches at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, fostering creativity in the next generation of young artists.
