As wild winds sweep across our familiar meadows, we hope to channel the collective strength of the herd. Inspired by the grace and fearlessness of the Horse, these artworks welcome different perspectives, colours, cultures, and stories to share in the joy of the new year.
The We are a Family series highlights the diverse communities that live in harmony within Vancouver, featuring Chinese Canadian, Japanese Canadian, Métis, and other stories. Each lantern carries the artists’ unique culture and language, shining bright to guide us forward.
As a visual arts exhibition placed outdoors in the tail end of winter, The Lantern City presents a colourful, new way to see each other, and see this city we all call home. These diverse artwork styles and cultural stories highlight how truly special Canada is when we stand together.
May their stories resonate with yours, and light the way to spring!
The Lantern City is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered on this land, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples whose arts and stories inspire us to bring communities together.
