This mixed-media artwork, “7Horses,” pulsates with the energy and momentum critical to both my culture and personal journey. Its subject anticipates the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse, symbolizing speed, success, and freedom. The dynamic composition and fiery palette of reds, oranges and golds, embody the relentless drive associated with the Horse sign.
Through my migration in Canada, the segmented stained-glass aesthetic reflects the complex experience of building a new life. Like a mosaic, the colours and fragments piece together diverse memories and cultural influences, demanding courage and strength. The horses’ unyielding motion speaks to the sheer passion and commitment required to overcome challenges and achieve successful resettlement in a new homeland, making the piece a striking ode to perseverance and new beginnings.

The Lantern City is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation).
